Home Security is Important in an Apartment or Townhouse
Something that many people don’t think about when moving into a new apartment or townhouse is home security. The truth is that most people think that keeping their apartment safe is the job of their complex manager, but this is not usually the case. The apartment manager can only do so much to keep the whole complex safe, and it can be difficult for him or her to pay attention to individual units.
Thus, the job of keeping your unit safe is up to you. Keep in mind that apartments are victims of robbery as often as the houses out in the suburbs – perhaps more so depending on the neighborhood in which you live.
Fortunately, with some common sense and a good home alarm system, it is possible to keep your apartment safe.
Remember that before you moved into your new apartment, it was someone else’s. While most tenants aren’t going to come back with their old keys and try to get into the house to rob you, there is the slim chance of that happening. It is not unheard of. This means that the first thing you must do is request that your complex manager have the locks to your unit and your storage area changed out.
Most managers will oblige, but if yours does not, you can offer to buy the locks and install them yourself. Though the money is coming from your pocket, you will feel much more secure knowing that only you, and the manager’s office, have copies of the keys.
Make sure all of the locks on the windows work as well and have them replaced if they don’t. If you have a balcony – even if you aren’t on the ground floor – make sure it is secure. Add a length of wood, perhaps part of a broom handle, to the runners on the door to ensure that it won’t open from the outside. Most thieves are not going to try to break a window when they can simply move on to another residence.
Another thing that you should do is look at the exterior of your apartment. If the hedges are too high they might conceal someone who wishes to do you harm, ask that they are cut. If there is not enough lighting in the walkways or the parking area, ask that this be remedied as well. You could even take up a petition with fellow renters to ensure that the complex becomes a safer place.
Still, the most important part of home security is having a good home alarm system. The alarm should be one that is monitored 24-hours a day, seven days a week to ensure that you have the most protection. You will have peace of mind no matter where you are – at work, on vacation, or sleeping in your bed.
A little bit of work will make you feel much more secure in your new townhouse or apartment, and that is priceless.
